"Initiated in 1981, the Puente Project is a proven answer to the enduring problem of Latino access to four-year institutions of higher learning in California. Puente has earned numerous awards for its innovative and effective work in preparing students for success in university admissions and academic work.
The partnership between the University of California, the California Community Colleges, and the Puente Project, under the leadership of the UC and with funding from the State of California, has served Puente students, teachers, and counselors very well across 27 years of combined effort. Committed senior leadership has been instrumental in ensuring Puente's success and sustaining Puente through repeated budget challenges.
Educational opportunity at four-year colleges and universities in California remains a daunting challenge for California's educationally disadvantaged high school and community college students. The need for Puente today is stronger than ever and so is the need for committed leadership."
